In October 2022, Roberta Kaplan traveled to Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida to question him under oath in the defamation lawsuit filed by her client, writer E. Jean Carroll, who accused him of sexual assault in the mid-1990s. Trump dismissed the accusation, stating, “She’s not my type.” During the deposition, he directed insults at Kaplan, calling her “a political operative” and “a disgrace.”
The clash continued through court filings and public statements, with Trump accusing Kaplan and vice versa. In a subsequent statement, Carroll credited the victory to Kaplan and her team.
Since Trump’s presidency, Kaplan is the only lawyer to secure two verdicts against him. Last May, another jury awarded Carroll over $5 million, finding Trump had sexually abused and defamed her.
Kaplan, known for her methodical approach, previously represented corporate giants, including the Minnesota Vikings and JP Morgan Chase & Company. Before founding her own firm in 2017, she was a partner at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. Notably, she represented gay rights activist Edith Windsor in a landmark Supreme Court case leading to federal recognition for same-sex married couples in 2013. Kaplan emphasized the importance of standing up to individuals like Trump who prioritize wealth and power over the law.
